These lines struck me because they exude independence, individuality, and responsibility. Considering “proverbs” means words of wisdom, maybe this suggests this poem is words of wisdom to prevent from going to Hell. Manson emphasized these lines by stating them as if they were facts and reading them one after the other as if he were reading a list of important tips to life. A few of those lines were, “ A fool sees not the same tree that a wise man sees./ He whose face gives no light shall never become a star”, “No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings”, and “Shame is Pride’s cloak.” Therefore, whilst listening to Manson’s recitation, it was to my surprise that although he may have skipped many lines from the poem, he emphasized the lines that struck me. During reading “Proverbs of Hell”, a few lines struck me. Considering the many omitted lines from “Proverbs of Hell” in Manson’s reading, it suggests Manson’s interpretation of the poem centers in on personal experience and differences.
